As part of an ongoing exploration of Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year and its wider colour palette, Sarah Tió developed the third edition of Fundamentals of Colour, a workshop designed to understand colour beyond paint itself — as a tool for creating atmosphere, identity and spatial experience.
This third edition was developed for architecture students, introducing colour as an active part of the design process and exploring how different combinations can inform and strengthen an architectural concept.
The workshop covered four main areas:
The objective was to develop a deeper understanding of colour harmonies and learn how to build combinations with a distinct personality, translating visual decisions into adjectives, moods and design intentions.
For the final exercise, students worked in groups to develop a concept for a given project through colour, texture and materiality. Each group translated these elements into a series of descriptive qualities, putting the principles explored during the workshop into practice.
The resulting concepts were then presented to the rest of the participants, encouraging discussion around how colour choices can communicate an idea and shape the perception of a space.
