class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">How do you teach something as subjective and iterative as design through a structured learning methodology?<\/h2>\n<p>When I began teaching architecture and interior design, one of the first questions I asked myself was:<\/p>\n<p><strong>What methodology should I use to teach designers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Design education presents an interesting challenge. Students need to develop technical knowledge and professional skills, but they also need to learn how to observe, question, experiment, make decisions and defend ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Creativity cannot simply be prescribed.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it can be supported by a structure that helps students understand <strong>how their thinking is evolving and which abilities they are developing throughout the process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>My starting point was the competency-based learning framework established by the <strong>Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM)<\/strong>, where I was part of the teaching faculty.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge was translating that framework into a methodology appropriate for creative disciplines.<\/p>\n<h2>Start With the Competency, Not the Assignment<\/h2>\n<p>Before defining an exercise, the first step is understanding the objective of the course.<\/p>\n<p>What should a student actually be capable of doing by the end of it?<\/p>\n<p>This distinction is important.<\/p>\n<p>Completing an assignment does not necessarily demonstrate that a student has developed the intended professional competency.<\/p>\n<p>The assignment is simply a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The real objective might be learning to analyse information, identify relationships, develop a concept, make material decisions, communicate an idea or critically evaluate a design proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Once those competencies are identified, the course can be structured backwards from the desired learning outcomes.<\/p>\n<h2>Structuring Learning Through Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy<\/h2>\n<p>To organise these objectives, I incorporated <strong>Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy<\/strong> as a framework for understanding different levels of learning.<\/p>\n<p>The methodology helps distinguish between simply remembering information and developing more complex abilities such as applying, analysing, evaluating and creating.<\/p>\n<p>For design education, this progression becomes particularly relevant.<\/p>\n<p>A student might first need to <strong>recognise<\/strong> a material.<\/p>\n<p>Then understand its properties.<\/p>\n<p>Then determine where it could appropriately be applied.<\/p>\n<p>Later, compare it with alternatives, evaluate its suitability within a particular context and eventually incorporate it into an original design proposal.<\/p>\n<p>The information may remain the same.<\/p>\n<p>What changes is the <strong>level of thinking required from the student<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>From Learning Objectives to Classroom Experience<\/h2>\n<p>Once the desired competencies and levels of learning are established, the next step is determining which teaching methodologies can support them.<\/p>\n<p>Not every objective requires the same type of activity.<\/p>\n<p>Some concepts may be introduced through lectures or visual references. Others are better understood through observation, research, experimentation, discussion or collaborative workshops.<\/p>\n<p>Individual exercises allow students to develop autonomy and personal criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Group exercises introduce negotiation, communication and collective problem-solving.<\/p>\n<p>Presentations require students to articulate the reasoning behind their decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The classroom therefore becomes more than the place where information is delivered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It becomes the environment in which knowledge is tested.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Designing the Learning Process<\/h2>\n<p>From this perspective, planning a course begins to resemble a design process itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Define the objective.<\/strong><br \/>What competency should be developed?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Determine the level of learning.<\/strong><br \/>What should the student understand, apply, analyse, evaluate or create?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Select the methodology.<\/strong><br \/>What type of learning experience could develop that ability?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design the activity.<\/strong><br \/>How will the student put the knowledge into practice?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evaluate the process.<\/strong><br \/>How can progress be observed and documented?<\/p>\n<p>The sequence creates a relationship between what is taught, what students do and what is eventually evaluated.<\/p>\n<h2>Evaluation as Feedback<\/h2>\n<p>The final component is assessment.<\/p>\n<p>In creative disciplines, evaluation can easily become subjective if expectations are not clearly established.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, I incorporated tools such as <strong>process journals, project records and structured presentation formats<\/strong>to document the evolution of the student&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>These tools allow evaluation to consider not only the final outcome but also the reasoning and development behind it.<\/p>\n<p>They also create a record that can be revisited.<\/p>\n<p>For the student, this makes progress more visible.<\/p>\n<p>For the lecturer, it provides information about where the learning process is working \u2014 and where the teaching methodology may need to be adjusted.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluation therefore becomes more than a grade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It becomes feedback in both directions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Teaching Designers How to Think<\/h2>\n<p>The objective of design education is not to teach students to arrive at the same answer.<\/p>\n<p>It is to give them the tools to develop their own answers with greater awareness, intention and critical judgement.<\/p>\n<p>A structured methodology does not need to restrict creativity.<\/p>\n<p>Used appropriately, it can create the conditions in which creativity becomes more deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>The role of the educator is therefore not simply to transfer knowledge, but to design a learning process in which students gradually become capable of <strong>observing, questioning, applying, analysing, evaluating and ultimately creating for themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Approach<\/strong><br \/>Competency-Based When I began teaching architecture and interior design, one of the first questions I asked myself was: What methodology should I use to teach designers? Design education presents an interesting challenge. Students need to develop technical knowledge and professional skills, but they also need to learn how to observe, question, experiment, make decisions and defend ideas. Creativity cannot simply be prescribed. Yet it can be supported by a structure that helps students understand how their thinking is evolving and which abilities they are developing throughout the process. My starting point was the competency-based learning framework established by the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), where I was part of the teaching faculty. The challenge was translating that framework into a methodology appropriate for creative disciplines. Start With the Competency, Not the Assignment Before defining an exercise, the first step is understanding the objective of the course. What should a student actually be capable of doing by the end of it? This distinction is important. Completing an assignment does not necessarily demonstrate that a student has developed the intended professional competency. The assignment is simply a vehicle. The real objective might be learning to analyse information, identify relationships, develop a concept, make material decisions, communicate an idea or critically evaluate a design proposal. Once those competencies are identified, the course can be structured backwards from the desired learning outcomes. Structuring Learning Through Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy To organise these objectives, I incorporated Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy as a framework for understanding different levels of learning. The methodology helps distinguish between simply remembering information and developing more complex abilities such as applying, analysing, evaluating and creating. For design education, this progression becomes particularly relevant. A student might first need to recognise a material. Then understand its properties. Then determine where it could appropriately be applied. Later, compare it with alternatives, evaluate its suitability within a particular context and eventually incorporate it into an original design proposal. The information may remain the same. What changes is the level of thinking required from the student. From Learning Objectives to Classroom Experience Once the desired competencies and levels of learning are established, the next step is determining which teaching methodologies can support them. Not every objective requires the same type of activity. Some concepts may be introduced through lectures or visual references. Others are better understood through observation, research, experimentation, discussion or collaborative workshops. Individual exercises allow students to develop autonomy and personal criteria. Group exercises introduce negotiation, communication and collective problem-solving. Presentations require students to articulate the reasoning behind their decisions. The classroom therefore becomes more than the place where information is delivered. It becomes the environment in which knowledge is tested. Designing the Learning Process From this perspective, planning a course begins to resemble a design process itself. Define the objective.What competency should be developed? Determine the level of learning.What should the student understand, apply, analyse, evaluate or create? Select the methodology.What type of learning experience could develop that ability? Design the activity.How will the student put the knowledge into practice? Evaluate the process.How can progress be observed and documented? The sequence creates a relationship between what is taught, what students do and what is eventually evaluated. Evaluation as Feedback The final component is assessment. In creative disciplines, evaluation can easily become subjective if expectations are not clearly established. For this reason, I incorporated tools such as process journals, project records and structured presentation formatsto document the evolution of the student&#8217;s work. These tools allow evaluation to consider not only the final outcome but also the reasoning and development behind it. They also create a record that can be revisited. For the student, this makes progress more visible. For the lecturer, it provides information about where the learning process is working \u2014 and where the teaching methodology may need to be adjusted. Evaluation therefore becomes more than a grade. It becomes feedback in both directions. Teaching Designers How to Think The objective of design education is not to teach students to arrive at the same answer. It is to give them the tools to develop their own answers with greater awareness, intention and critical judgement. A structured methodology does not need to restrict creativity. Used appropriately, it can create the conditions in which creativity becomes more deliberate. The role of the educator is therefore not simply to transfer knowledge, but to design a learning process in which students gradually become capable of observing, questioning, applying, analysing, evaluating and ultimately creating for themselves.
