\u2014 becomes part of a larger urban system. It changes a street, modifies a view, introduces new patterns of movement and contributes, consciously or unconsciously, to the evolving image of a city.<\/p>\n<p>This presentation explored architectural intervention as an opportunity to look beyond the boundaries of an individual project and consider a broader question:<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can a building give back to the city?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Seeing the City as a Citizen First<\/h2>\n<p>Santo Domingo is a city shaped by rapid growth, increasing density and a strong dependence on private transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Its contemporary skyline has transformed dramatically, particularly within the <strong>Pol\u00edgono Central<\/strong>, where commercial development, residential towers and major corporate headquarters have concentrated alongside some of the city&#8217;s most heavily trafficked avenues.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, some of Santo Domingo&#8217;s most memorable urban experiences occur at a very different scale.<\/p>\n<p>Places such as <strong>Parque Col\u00f3n<\/strong>, <strong>Plaza de Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> and the <strong>Malec\u00f3n<\/strong> demonstrate the importance of public space, walkability, landscape and human interaction in shaping how we experience the city.<\/p>\n<p>This contrast led to an idea I began describing as the <strong>Citizen Architect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Before observing the city as an architect, I experience it as a citizen.<\/p>\n<p>I walk through it.<br \/>I sit in it.<br \/>I move through its traffic.<br \/>I experience its heat, vegetation, distances and public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Only afterwards does architectural training provide another layer through which to interpret what I have observed.<\/p>\n<p>The architect is therefore not simply an external designer intervening in a site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We are participants in the city before we become designers of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Architecture and the Image of the City<\/h2>\n<p>Kevin Lynch described the city as a spatial construction perceived gradually through time.<\/p>\n<p>That idea becomes particularly relevant when considering individual architectural interventions.<\/p>\n<p>A single building does not create a city. Yet thousands of individual decisions eventually construct its identity.<\/p>\n<p>Every fa\u00e7ade, setback, landscape intervention, entrance and relationship with the pavement contributes to the experience of the street.<\/p>\n<p>This means that when architects receive a project, we also receive an opportunity \u2014 however small \u2014 to contribute something to the urban environment surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p>The responsibility of architecture extends beyond the property line.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element example explored during the presentation was <strong>Ilumel<\/strong>, a furniture and design destination located within Santo Domingo&#8217;s Pol\u00edgono Central, at the intersection of Abraham Lincoln Avenue and Jos\u00e9 Amado Soler Street.<\/p>\n<p>The project developed over several years through a masterplan that gradually integrated a collection of previously separate buildings into a larger architectural composition.<\/p>\n<p>The intervention added more than <strong>10,000 square metres<\/strong> dedicated primarily to exhibition and commercial spaces while creating a unified architectural identity for the complex.<\/p>\n<p>But the project presented another opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Its prominent location meant that the intervention would not only transform the experience of the store; it would also alter the image of one of the city&#8217;s significant urban intersections.<\/p>\n<p>The architecture therefore needed to respond at two scales:<\/p>\n<p><strong>the scale of the building and the scale of the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Existing contours, neighbouring buildings, topography and approaches from different directions influenced the development of the volume.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than treating the fa\u00e7ade as a single composition, its proportions and gestures responded to the changing conditions surrounding the site.<\/p>\n<p>Landscape became another important element, helping mediate between the architecture, pavement and street.<\/p>\n<h2>Divano: Extending the Intervention<\/h2>\n<p>The masterplan also included <strong>Divano<\/strong>, positioned alongside the Ilumel complex.<\/p>\n<p>Here, the architectural language was reduced to the relationship between two contrasting volumes.<\/p>\n<p>One appears heavier and more monolithic, expressed through concrete. The other becomes lighter and warmer through a sequence of vertical timber elements.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, the project explored a direct relationship between the building and the city sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of treating the property boundary as a rigid separation, the intervention considered how architecture, landscape and public space could visually extend into one another.<\/p>\n<p>The objective was not simply to create a recognisable commercial building.<\/p>\n<p>It was to ask how a private development could still make a positive contribution to the experience of the street.<\/p>\n<h2>Five Principles for Urban Intervention<\/h2>\n<p>Looking back at these projects led to five principles that can guide the way we approach architecture within an existing urban context.<\/p>\n<h3>01 \u2014 Observation<\/h3>\n<p>Before designing, observe.<\/p>\n<p>Understand the city through everyday experience rather than exclusively through plans, regulations or satellite images.<\/p>\n<p>How do people actually use the street?<br \/>Where do they stop?<br \/>Where is shade needed?<br \/>What is missing?<\/p>\n<p>Observation turns context into something lived rather than abstract.<\/p>\n<h3>02 \u2014 Experience<\/h3>\n<p>Architects should continuously move between the perspective of designer and user.<\/p>\n<p>A decision that works perfectly in a drawing may feel entirely different when experienced at street level.<\/p>\n<p>The question becomes:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Would this space work for me if I encountered it every day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>03 \u2014 Empathy<\/h3>\n<p>Every architectural intervention enters into a relationship with what already exists.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbouring buildings, pedestrians, vegetation, infrastructure and communities are not background elements. They are part of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding their scale and character helps architecture determine when to contrast, when to connect and when to step back.<\/p>\n<h3>04 \u2014 Interaction<\/h3>\n<p>A building should not simply occupy its site.<\/p>\n<p>It should establish relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The ground floor, entrances, landscape, fa\u00e7ade and boundary conditions determine how architecture communicates with its surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>These moments are where the private project meets the collective city.<\/p>\n<h3>05 \u2014 Experimentation<\/h3>\n<p>Architecture is also a continuous process of testing and learning.<\/p>\n<p>Ideas move from concept to drawings, from digital models to construction and eventually into everyday use.<\/p>\n<p>Once a project becomes occupied, we can observe what worked, what did not and what should be approached differently next time.<\/p>\n<p>Every completed project therefore becomes part of the research for the next one.<\/p>\n<h2>What Does Architecture Give Back?<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the most important question is not simply whether a building looks good.<\/p>\n<p>It is whether the project establishes a meaningful relationship with its context and contributes something to the people who experience it.<\/p>\n<p>Architecture is only one component within the enormous complexity of a city.<\/p>\n<p>But collectively, these interventions matter.<\/p>\n<p>A better pavement edge.<br \/>A tree preserved.<br \/>A shaded entrance.<br \/>A more generous setback.<br \/>A connection instead of a barrier.<\/p>\n<p>Individually, they may appear small.<\/p>\n<p>Together, they construct the experience and eventually the image of the city.<\/p>\n<p>This is the responsibility behind the idea of the <strong>Citizen Architect<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>to experience the city first as a citizen, understand it through the sensitivity of an architect, and design with an awareness of Every project \u2014 regardless of its scale \u2014 becomes part of a larger urban system. It changes a street, modifies a view, introduces new patterns of movement and contributes, consciously or unconsciously, to the evolving image of a city. This presentation explored architectural intervention as an opportunity to look beyond the boundaries of an individual project and consider a broader question: What can a building give back to the city? Seeing the City as a Citizen First Santo Domingo is a city shaped by rapid growth, increasing density and a strong dependence on private transportation. Its contemporary skyline has transformed dramatically, particularly within the Pol\u00edgono Central, where commercial development, residential towers and major corporate headquarters have concentrated alongside some of the city&#8217;s most heavily trafficked avenues. At the same time, some of Santo Domingo&#8217;s most memorable urban experiences occur at a very different scale. Places such as Parque Col\u00f3n, Plaza de Espa\u00f1a and the Malec\u00f3n demonstrate the importance of public space, walkability, landscape and human interaction in shaping how we experience the city. This contrast led to an idea I began describing as the Citizen Architect. Before observing the city as an architect, I experience it as a citizen. I walk through it.I sit in it.I move through its traffic.I experience its heat, vegetation, distances and public spaces. Only afterwards does architectural training provide another layer through which to interpret what I have observed. The architect is therefore not simply an external designer intervening in a site. We are participants in the city before we become designers of it. Architecture and the Image of the City Kevin Lynch described the city as a spatial construction perceived gradually through time. That idea becomes particularly relevant when considering individual architectural interventions. A single building does not create a city. Yet thousands of individual decisions eventually construct its identity. Every fa\u00e7ade, setback, landscape intervention, entrance and relationship with the pavement contributes to the experience of the street. This means that when architects receive a project, we also receive an opportunity \u2014 however small \u2014 to contribute something to the urban environment surrounding it. The responsibility of architecture extends beyond the property line. \u00a0 Ilumel: Architecture at an Urban Intersection One example explored during the presentation was Ilumel, a furniture and design destination located within Santo Domingo&#8217;s Pol\u00edgono Central, at the intersection of Abraham Lincoln Avenue and Jos\u00e9 Amado Soler Street. The project developed over several years through a masterplan that gradually integrated a collection of previously separate buildings into a larger architectural composition. The intervention added more than 10,000 square metres dedicated primarily to exhibition and commercial spaces while creating a unified architectural identity for the complex. But the project presented another opportunity. Its prominent location meant that the intervention would not only transform the experience of the store; it would also alter the image of one of the city&#8217;s significant urban intersections. The architecture therefore needed to respond at two scales: the scale of the building and the scale of the city. Existing contours, neighbouring buildings, topography and approaches from different directions influenced the development of the volume. Rather than treating the fa\u00e7ade as a single composition, its proportions and gestures responded to the changing conditions surrounding the site. Landscape became another important element, helping mediate between the architecture, pavement and street. Divano: Extending the Intervention The masterplan also included Divano, positioned alongside the Ilumel complex. Here, the architectural language was reduced to the relationship between two contrasting volumes. One appears heavier and more monolithic, expressed through concrete. The other becomes lighter and warmer through a sequence of vertical timber elements. More importantly, the project explored a direct relationship between the building and the city sidewalk. Instead of treating the property boundary as a rigid separation, the intervention considered how architecture, landscape and public space could visually extend into one another. The objective was not simply to create a recognisable commercial building. It was to ask how a private development could still make a positive contribution to the experience of the street. Five Principles for Urban Intervention Looking back at these projects led to five principles that can guide the way we approach architecture within an existing urban context. 01 \u2014 Observation Before designing, observe. Understand the city through everyday experience rather than exclusively through plans, regulations or satellite images. How do people actually use the street?Where do they stop?Where is shade needed?What is missing? Observation turns context into something lived rather than abstract. 02 \u2014 Experience Architects should continuously move between the perspective of designer and user. A decision that works perfectly in a drawing may feel entirely different when experienced at street level. The question becomes: Would this space work for me if I encountered it every day? 03 \u2014 Empathy Every architectural intervention enters into a relationship with what already exists. Neighbouring buildings, pedestrians, vegetation, infrastructure and communities are not background elements. They are part of the project. Understanding their scale and character helps architecture determine when to contrast, when to connect and when to step back. 04 \u2014 Interaction A building should not simply occupy its site. It should establish relationships. The ground floor, entrances, landscape, fa\u00e7ade and boundary conditions determine how architecture communicates with its surroundings. These moments are where the private project meets the collective city. 05 \u2014 Experimentation Architecture is also a continuous process of testing and learning. Ideas move from concept to drawings, from digital models to construction and eventually into everyday use. Once a project becomes occupied, we can observe what worked, what did not and what should be approached differently next time.
